The illegitimate second child of Byron Arkwright, demon hunter, Thomas' mother was herself a demon - something Byron knew, but did not tell anyone when he first brought Thomas home. She was raised as though she were a full sister to her brothers; Byron hoped to never have to tell any of them otherwise, as no signs of her demonic heritage seemed to be manifesting. If they did in later life, he assumed that he would be there to fill his children in. He trained the three of them to be hunters, instructing them in both the use of weapons and the basic hunter magic - although Thomas was never quite able to grasp or control the latter, as those spells are usually strictly the domain of humans. Explaining it to her (at the time) as simply a quirk of the magic, Byron simply doubled Thomas' weapons training to make up for it.

As a particularly old hunter family, the Arkwrights were able to wield blood magic as well as the generic hunter spells; spells woven into the bloodline by their ancestors, and available only to those carrying Arkwright blood. A colleague of Byron's, Dr. Faker (not of a family with blood magic himself, though his deceased wife's family had held some), was informed by the spirit Vector that harnessing as much blood magic as he could would help to save his terminally ill son, Haruto. Vector assured him that the ritual would do no more harm to the sacrifices than taking the blood magic from them. He lied.

Faker's ritual killed Byron, as well as Kazuma Tsukumo, and left Byron's children alone. Ordinarily, this would have meant them being separated, as the eldest, Chris, was only fifteen, and they had no other family to take them in. However, traditionally the older families considered their children to be of age once they had been taught the family's blood magic - something done at the age of fourteen - and this quirk was reflected in laws that had never been repealed from times when it had been more commonplace for hunter children to be left orphaned at such a young age. That, coupled with a family fund set up for circumstances like this, meant that the Arkwright children were able to stay together in England.

A few months after Byron's death, Thomas began to go through puberty. Something that would have been potentially awkward anyway in a house with only her two brothers, but that was made moreso by the fact that at this time, her demonic heritage finally began to manifest. She tried to hide it, not knowing what was happening to her, but Michael found her one day when she was unable to hide her demonic features and - thinking she had been possessed, or that some demon was taking her form - attacked her, giving her the cross-shaped scar under her right eye. Chris intervened to protect her and later, searching through Byron's old belongings, they found a letter addressed to her from him that explained who and what she was. There was some debate between her brothers as to whether she was safe to keep around, but eventually it was decided that Byron would not have brought her home if he didn't think her humanity could win out, and besides that Thomas was insistent that she wished to remain a hunter.

Chris - as the only person who now knew how to - eventually taught her the Arkwright blood magic to make up for her inability to use hunter spells. The teaching... escalated, and the two of them struck up a relationship in secret, hidden even from Michael. Things continued that way for a while, until - around three years after Byron's death - the family received an invitation from the sorcerer Heartland to come to his city, one that promised answers as to their father's death and a place to stay in his tower. They took him up on this, and traveled to Heartland City, where they spent three months before Thomas and Chris were pulled into Shuffle's hotel.
